Race Report by Paul Beech
First race of the weekend and I was the sole rider for this one with others opting to rest for Sundays race. Bikerstaffe circuit is a fast, flat 4.5 mile circuit, with 2 tight bends which usually feel like a sprint on exiting the corner.
We all amassed outside of race HQ as we had a 4 mile ride to the circuit, the sun was shining which was a plus from last weekend’s down poor but it was still a chilly 6°C so leg & arm warmers were the order of the day.
We set off behind the lead car and once around a couple of turns we were on the A road and the peloton was rolling along at 35mph+, which was a testing warm up as riders were being dropped before arriving at the circuit. Once we reached the circuit and all riders back together the flag was dropped and we were away.
As expected there was a fury of attacks and chases which made for a stop start first couple of laps but was the race began to settle. The break of the day happened around lap 6 of 10 and the peloton gave it room to develop. Once the chase started a number of riders were brought back but 3 remained out front and that would be the top 3 places covered.
However behind in the peloton we were on our last lap and the pace began to slow as riders were looking at each other for the sprint. After coming round the second to last bend riders started trying to move up before we hit the last bend which leads to the sprint finish.
As all the riders started speeding up, and all chasing the same piece of tarmac, the inevitable colliding of riders and a mass carbon crunching bang happened! Half the peloton was down.
I managed to get around the crash and chase the group in front but by the last 100 metres I had nothing left for the sprint and rolled across the line in 18
