Westmorland Tankard Road Race Report

Westmorland Tankard is a rolling circuit with a couple of climbs which in all makes it a tough race. The sun was shining in Endmoor, Kendal and as the saying goes, “suns out guns out” not that I have any guns to speak of.

I set off for a quick warm up once changed and quickly didn’t feel as warm as standing in the sun but I stuck with Shorts. Once back at the HQ we set off for the start line in convoy behind the lead car and following a rider briefing we were off.

imageI quickly moved myself to the front as I could see the VCUK boys were here in numbers and all at the front, so I was expecting an early move. As expected one rider went away for about a lap but it came back as no one went across and with four laps to go is a little early on a course like today. There were quite a number of attacks but all came back and the pack weren’t for letting anything get away and everyone seemed to be strong and ready for it.

After 3 laps there was a really effort to break the peloton up and about 15 riders got away over 1 of the climbs and a second group formed and we managed to pull it back together just before the decent. However the effort started to take its toll and riders were being shed each lap and the attacks were reducing.

Once on the final lap it was relatively steady until we hit the climbs to the finish and a break got away of about 15 riders so I set off to chase them down and managed to get within a couple of meters  before the decent to the next climb. Once on the next climb and everyone was going full gas or at least that is how it felt. I started to feel the legs get heavy and I couldn’t move up any positions and lost a couple on the way up the final climb past the farm and finished 21st.

Another great result by Adam Darbyshire (St Helens CRC) who now moves up to Cat 2 following his win.

All in all a good course with good weather and happy to say a safe race. And feeling very tired.

Finally, a big thank you to the organisers, marshals, volunteers, NEG support.
