Ian Mountain Memorial Road Race 04/06/2017

by Si Deplitch

Four of the team crossed the border into Yorkshire for the Ian Mountain Memorial Road Race. It had a very reasonable start time of 10 am which eased the early rise. The course profile looked flat on the start sheet, but it turned out to be rolling with 1 short ‘big ring’ kicker, which would take its toll on the legs after 20 laps of the 3.5 mile circuit.

The race kicked off with numerous attacks attempting to form a break. Craig closed the gap a few times, stringing out the bunch in the headwind on the back section of the course. The wind seemed to increase in strength with every lap.  Early in the race Ste’s luck ran out with a puncture forcing an early retirement.

With about 4 laps to go a break of five was formed, the repetitive strain of the previous fast paced 15 laps meant that there was little effort to chase from the bunch. By this point Craig and John Bamford had joined Ste as spectators.

With 2 laps to go I started to eye up the remains of the bunch for sprinters. On the back section of the last lap two riders jumped off the front and I followed. It was too early for a sprint but at least this increased my odds of a decent placing.

The lead group of five stayed clear to take the flag, followed by two chases, I faded sprinting up the rise to the line taking 10th place overall.

Many things thanks to Wakefield CC and volunteers for excellent race organisation and Ste for photos.
